Before I forget

J&G Sales has used FM90s for sale to the tune of $310-$340 each. Couldn't buy an FEG Hi-Power for that much last I checked, and the FM's don't have the FEG's reputation for sub-par metallurgy.

Quick Update to Previous Post
2010.04.26 10:21 - Guns
The receivers pictured are both Cavalry Arms CAV-15 Mk. II receivers. All three (the 2 CAV-15s and the Armalite) were purchased through DSG Arms.

Further, it looks as though the safety could be remove with a firm tap from a properly-sized punch, while the lever is between the safe and fire positions. I have also just remembered that the instructions suggest clipping the bolt catch spring by a coil or two, so I may try that this week and see if that solves that set of problems.

Just dropping a separate post so it shows up in the RSS for anybody who cares.

Oh, right. Pictures.

Finally got around to photographing yesterday the lowers I mentioned last week. I am slow, and easily distracted.

Yellow lower:

Green:

Not shown: Armalite. I took pictures, but they came out poorly.

So, the yellow lower is assembled, but I may send it in for repair or replacement when the CAV-15 thing is sorted out, because I screwed up a couple things.

First was the roll pin that retains the buffer detente.

I actually cut off about a quarter of it that was hanging off the side from which I drove it in. As long as it stays put, though, I intend to leave it alone.

Before installing the bolt catch, I got a little overexcited when it came time to function-test the trigger and forgot to hold back the hammer so it wouldn't slam into the rear of the magazine well:

Turns out, unsupported plastic can crack under impact. Who knew?

Neither's life-threatening, I think, so I'll chalk that up as a success, with valuable lessons learned. And, if/when it's sent for repairs, it'll be on my dime, and I'll keep a close eye on it in the meantime.

The bolt catch is very stiff. Partly that's due to the damage I inflicted, and I think it will loosen up some with time, but the whole receiver is an eensy bit tight.

Lessons learned:
1. When I get around to building the green receiver, I'm going to get a vice and a second pair of hands to hold the receiver in place and to hold the buffer detent down.
2. Install the bolt catch before installing the FCG. Do not let the hammer strike the back of the magazine well, stupid.
3. Get an ambi-safety ahead of time. Now that it's in, I see no way to remove the safety lever, and I'd have preferred one that was accessible from either side.
4. I really need to find a better approach to problem solving than getting a bigger hammer.

[Addendum: Just a quick update. The receivers pictured above are both Cavalry Arms CAV-15 Mk. II receivers. All three (the 2 CAV-15s and the Armalite) were purchased through DSG Arms.

Woke up, fell out of bed, etc.

Did not have time to grab a cup, however.

I overslept by nearly two hours this morning, which made me a little more frantic than usual on the way out the door. Only a little, as my morning schedule allows for about an hour to an hour-and-a-half of oversleeping without serious consequences.

On the other hand, my glasses fell apart this morning, so I'm wearing my previous pair instead. Prescription's pretty close, but I'll have to arrange something this weekend to replace the primary pair.

Oh, and I'm picking up 1.25 guns afternoon. Well, 3 stripped receivers, two of which have a grip and buttstock. I'm a little early. Pics/details tonight or later this week.
