So, comic book movies are all the rage these days

Still, I hadn't expected that Will Eisner's The Spirit would be a likely licensee.

In case you're wondering, I'm not actually familiar with the book. I know it's very well regarded in comic book artist/writer circles, but that's about all I know. Anyway, I figured I wasn't the only one who didn't know this was coming, and thought some of my potential readers might be interested. I guess I'll see if the waveform collapses and proves me right about that.

2008.04.07 16:26 - Guns, Magpul Masada/Bushmaster ACR, Internet Stupidity
So, the May issue of Small Arms Review has an article about the Bushmaster ACR. Except, that, it actually doesn't: it has an article about the Magpul Masada. I'm guessing that the article was written multiple months ago, and that Bushmaster hasn't got any review units floating around yet. That seems a shame, because there are some significant differences between the prototype Masada and the production ACR.

In particular, the writer pointed out a brass deflector that won't be on the ACR, and the Masada's compatability with Magpul's MIAD grip cores, a feature that, IIRC, the ACR won't be sharing at release. The ACR will, at release, be available in any color, so long as it's black, and any caliber, so long as it's 5.56 NATO. The reviewed weapon is a tan color, called Flat Dark Earth, and the article reports that it will be available in 5.56 NATO, 7.62x39, 5.45x39, 6.8SPC and 6.5 Grendel, with AK-style lowers to be available (this is unannounced). The color's a nitpicky thing, but the caliber question is significant (at least to me), and the AK lower matters to some other people, I'm guessing.

It's a nice article, actually, it just doesn't have much there that's really new if you've been following the subject obsessively, as I have, and I am not really in the magazine's target demographic otherwise. Here's hoping Bushmaster makes some sort of announcement in May at the NRA bash, or no later than June. So I bought some books while I was at Barnes & Noble buying a magazine.

Still, it bothers me that a rifle that is supposed to be available for purchase within the next two-to-three months doesn't have an actual review floating around.

Things in my RSS aggregator: Uncrate
2008.03.31 11:43 - Miscellanea
I really hope I'm the only person who bothers with Uncrate. I picked it up from Gizmodo, where a semi-regular summary of the interesting bits of Uncrate's activity gets posted as 'Man Stuff', but I find myself thinking that it might be better summarized as 'Man-Child Stuff'. Not that I'm free of such an affliction myself, but I find it hard to take their recommendations on things very seriously.

On the one hand, I did buy a pair of cufflinks they featured a year or more back. More recently, I bought a CD they'd pimped some time ago (FWIW: wasn't impressed).

On the other hand, they tend to feature either silly toys or things which are just plain overpriced. There's a heavy emphasis on New! and general hipsterism, and I don't really find either particularly appealing. And, while I like silly toys, they're not something I think of as 'cool' in a mainstream-adult sort of sense.

I really can't say it any better than this

Rachel Lucas has taken a look at the Obama's recently opened tax returns.

Link stolen from SayUncle, wherein another significant observation is made.

Really, the mind boggles.
